Like any other states Perak carries its own history, culture and interesting places to visit. Centuries ago the discovery of tin ores in Larut, Taiping led to the economy to boom. More mining areas came into existence soon after and besides tin ores natural rubber also played an important role and still is. This development was significant and resulted in the birth of a multiracial society with the Chinese being interested in tin mining. As you travel along the North-South highway, you will capture sceneries of magnificent limestone mountains. Many caves existed to be explored and have become places of meditation for the Buddhist monks.
1) Perak Tong is situated about 6 km North of Ipoh on the main trunk road of Perak. It is famous for its attractive statues and paintings of Buddha. There is passage which leads you in to the interior of the caves and after a steep climb of about 385 steps it opens out to a ledge, which offers breathtaking sights of the country side.
2) Sam Poh Tong, a famous cave temple located on the outskirts of Ipoh features a selection of impressive art work and mystical murals donning the inside walls. There are numerous statues of Buddha that are set amongst natural stalactites and stalagmites, making it an ideal place to take photos. Towards the inner courtyard of the temple, you will be able to see a pond with some tortoises as symbol of longevity. Devotees believe that releasing tortoise into the water brings blessing and longevity. The temple premises also have a wishing well for those seeking better fortunes.  3) Tambun Hot Springs is about 15 km away from Ipoh heading towards Tanjung Rambutan. The Hot Springs promises you a rejuvenating experience as you take an invigorating hot bath or enjoy sauna from a natural spring source.
4) At Tambun Caves you can experience the thrill of watching old wall paintings that have been adjudged to be 2000 years old. Its Neolithic rock drawings are likened to paintings.

5) Gua Tempurung is one of the most majestic white marble and limestone formations in Malaysia. It is an ancient cave that stretches over a kilometer from Sungai Siput to Kuala Dipang. Concealed within the limestone massif is an intricate system of caves that form beautiful galleries of stalagmites, stalactites, limestone pools and other amazing rock formations.
6) Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is one of the best known bird sanctuaries in Asia. It has been developed with the aim of protecting the different species of migratory and residential birds of the country. The Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is an amazing place for bird watching as well as for fishing. |
