Sweet pomeloes
Looking for sweet pomeloes is as hard to find as looking for good durians. You can smell, knock, pat and shake it about and sometimes you still find its not a good buy when you open it up. We are normally cautious when buying pomeloes because no matter what the seller promises you it is usually sour, dry or just unripe.
Well Thetravelerspage found a pomelo plantation that had very good and sweet pomeloes just off the road to Tambun from Ipoh. The owner Mrs Lai and her father sells their fruits at the road side outside of their plantation. we were allowed to look see into her plantation as she took the time to give us a tour around her ochard. She gave us some pointers into the planting of pomeloes and the work required to care for a plantation like hers. We tried the fruits there and bought back some for the neighbours and all were amazed at the sweetness of the fruits. In her ochard she also plants cikus (sapodilla) and jambu air or "rose apple". The cikus are quite sweet and large sized. The jambu air was juicy but not that sweet. She said that the jambu air trees are quite old and no more in the productive fruiting stage.
With developement coming her way, she wonders when the plantation would end. The land adjoining her plantation has now made way for new shophouses.
So let us try to give you directions to guide you to their plantation if you are thinking of visiting Ipoh anytime soon. Pomelo fruits ripe for the picking Directions: Address is #213, Jalan 4 Ampang Baru, Ipoh. Tel 016-5603395. To find this place head for Jalan Raja Musa Mahadi. Where Jalan Raja Musa Mahadi ends and Jalan Dairy begins there is a junction Jalan Ampang Baru 6. Turn in to that road and follow it straight. you will notice several lots of pomelo ochards. Keep going until you see new shop lots on the right. Her ochard is just after the shoplots . |
